Geburtsstätten von (Populär-) Kultur — und damit seit jeher Räume der Diskontinuität. Zum anderen sind sie Ausgangspunkte und Motoren gesellschaftlicher Transformation: Von der Aware-ness für – und der Akzeptanz von unterschiedlichen Lebensstilen und Geschlechterrollen bis hin zu progressiver Gesundheitspolitik.
RAW Gelände
Das ehemalige Reichsbahn-Ausbesserungs-Wer (RAW) Franz Stenzer hat eine Bewegte Vergangenheit hinter sich, die über 150 Jahre zurück reicht. Das Gelände entwickelte sich Schritt für Schritt zu einem wichtigen Wartungs- und Ausbesserungs-Werk für Eisen-bahnen und Wagons. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg arbeiteten hier zwischenzeitlich mehrere tau-send Menschen für die DDR Reichsbahn. Auch ein eigener Kultursaal wurde gebaut (heute: Astra), wo Parteifunktionäre vor dem Kulturprogramm die Arbeiter und Beamten des Werks auf Planerfüllung und die Leuchtturmfunktion des RAWs für die Werktätigen der Republik einschworen.
Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahr wurde es still um das RAW, der Betrieb wurde eingestellt und die Fläche zur alternativen Nutzung ausgeschrieben. Eine Initiative von Künstlern und Kultur-schaffenden erkämpfte sich eine Option zur Zwischennutzung des in den Dornröschenschlaf gefallenen Geländes, mit Ateliers, Proberäumen, Kunst-werkstätten und sozialen Angeboten. Nach und nach kamen weitere Akteure und viele neue Venues hinzu. Heute wartet das Gelände auf eine umfassende Umgestaltung zu einem neuen Stadtviertel, indem gewachsene Strukturen und Pioniere am Standort verbleiben und somit auch Teil der Zukunft des RAWs sind.

The former Reichsbahn Repair Works (RAW) Franz Stenzer has a long and eventful history reaching back more than 150 years. Over time, the estate evolved into a key maintenance and repair facility for trains and railway carriages. Following the Second World War, several thousand people were employed here at various stages by the GDR Reichsbahn. A dedicated cultural hall was also built (today: Astra), where party officials, ahead of the cultural programme, would rally the workers and civil servants of the works to meet production targets and underline the RAW’s role as a flagship for the working people of the republic.
From the mid-1990s onwards, the RAW grew quiet: operations ceased, and the estate was put forward for alternative use. An initiative of artists and cultural workers secured an arrangement for interim use of the grounds, which had slipped into a kind of Sleeping Beauty slumber, establishing studios, rehearsal rooms, workshops and social schemes. Gradually, further actors and a wealth of new venues joined them. Today, the estate awaits comprehensive trans-formation into a new urban quarter, in which the established structures and pioneering initiatives will remain rooted in place, and thus continue as part of the RAW’s future.

b-dome
Der b-dome eröffnete 2024 auf dem RAW-Gelände in Berlin und ist der erste geodätische Dome Deutschlands, der speziell für immersive 360°-Formate gebaut wurde.
Hier wird der erste Anlaufpunkt für die Teilnehmenden der Stadt nach Acht sein: Infostand, Catering, Akkreditierung, Awareness etc.
Im b-dome finden vielseitige Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Performances, Konferenzen oder kulturelle Programm statt. Die Konstruktion hat einen Durchmesser von 19 Metern und ist mit einem internen Projektionstuch unter negativem Druck ausgestattet. Sechs 21K Panasonic-Projektoren ermöglichen eine durchgehende 360°-Projektion, ergänzt durch ein 5.1-Surround-Soundsystem.
The b-dome opened in 2024 at Berlin’s RAW site and is the first geodesic dome in Germany built specifically for immersive 360° formats. It hosts a wide range of events, including concerts, performances, conferences and cultural programmes.
For Stadt nach Acht attendants, this is also the first point of contact, providing information, catering, accreditation and awareness facilities.
The structure spans 19 metres in diameter and is equipped with an internal projection membrane under negative pressure. Six 21K Panasonic projectors create seamless 360° visuals, complemented by a 5.1 surround sound system.
Lokschuppen
Der Club, früher als Suicide Circus bekannt, eröffnete 1994 und wurde rasch zu einem festen Bestandteil der Berliner Technoszene. Benannt nach der einflussreichen Band Suicide, traten hier Größen wie DJ Hell und Ellen Allien auf. Nach der Schließung 1999 durch Gentrifizierung fand der Club neue Orte – seit 2009 ist er im RAW-Gelände zuhause und lebt dort weiter. 2024 erhielt er seinen heutigen Namen: Lokschuppen Berlin.
Geprägt wird der Club von zahlreichen lokalen Kollektiven, die für ein vielfältiges Publikum und ein breites musikalisches Spektrum sorgen – von Groove und Trance bis hin zu Hard Techno, Hardcore und House. Vielfalt gehört zum Kern des Lokschuppen: Ein Ort, an dem sich alle willkommen fühlen. Mit Klängen von experimentell bis klassisch bietet er einen echten Rückzugsort für alle, die Musik und Tanz lieben.
Formerly known as Suicide Circus, the club first opened in 1994 and quickly became a cornerstone of Berlin’s techno scene. Named after the influential band Suicide, it hosted pioneers such as DJ Hell and Ellen Allien. Though forced to close in 1999 due to gentrification, it found new homes, settling at the RAW site in 2009 where it continues to thrive. Since 2024 it has been rebranded as Lokschuppen Berlin.
The club’s identity is shaped by a range of local collectives, bringing together a diverse crowd across genres from groove and trance to hard techno, hardcore and house. Diversity remains at its heart, creating a space where everyone feels welcome. With sounds spanning the avant-garde to classic strains of techno, Lokschuppen stands as a true refuge for music and dance lovers
Cassiopeia
Das „Cassiopeia“ eröffnete 2005 als Club- und Konzertlocation auf dem RAW-Gelände in Berlin-Friedrichshain und etablierte sich als wandelbare Bühne der Subkultur. Mal fungierte es als Hip-Hop-Stage, mal als 80er- und 90er-Disco, mal als Spielfläche für genreübergreifende Formate – stets erfand es sich neu. Es vereinte Ausgelassenheit mit Awareness, Spektakel mit Safeplace, und setzte bewusst auf einen Gegenentwurf zum Mainstream. Heute steht es für eine ehrliche, tolerante und weltoffene Szene, die tief in der Berliner Nachtkultur verwurzelt ist.

„Cassiopeia“ opened in 2005 as a club and concert venue on the RAW estate in Berlin-Friedrichshain, and quickly became a stage for subcultural expression in many forms. At times it was a hip-hop club, at others an ’80s or ’90s disco, or a home for crossgenre experi-ments, always shifting, always reinventing itself. It mixed exuberance with a sense of care, spectacle with a safe-space ethos, and set itself up as a deliberate alternative to the mainstream. Today it stands for an open, tolerant and cosmopolitan scene, firmly rooted in Berlin’s nightlife culture.

Crack Bellmer
Das „Crack Bellmer“ eröffnete 2011 und entwickelte sich im Berliner RAW-Gelände zu einem kleinen, rauen Wohnzimmer der Nachtkultur. Musikalisch kura-tierte es ein breites Spektrum – von Jazz- und Swing-Abenden über Funk bis hin zu House, Tech-House und technoiden Nächten – und setzte auf dichte DJ-Programme in intimem Setting. Als Teil des ehemaligen Reichsbahnausbesserungswerks an der Revaler Straße bettete es sich in die vielgestaltige Kultur- und Clubland-schaft des RAW ein. Heute fungiert es als niederschwelliger Treffpunkt für Szene, Nachbarschaft und Gäste und ist eine „kleine Utopie“ des Areals, die mit Lesungen, Workshops und Clubkultur ihre Bedeutung über den Dancefloor hinaus entfaltet.

„Crack Bellmer“ opened in 2011 and grew within Berlin’s RAW estate into what feels like a small, rough-edged living room of nightlife. Musically, it has ranged widely — from jazz and swing nights to funk, house, tech-house and techno — with dense DJ line-ups in an intimate setting. As part of the former railway repair grounds on Revaler Straße, it has become firmly woven into the RAW’s diverse cultural and club landscape. Today it is an open meeting place for the local scene, the neighbourhood and visitors alike, a kind of “small utopia” whose reach extends beyond the dancefloor with readings, workshops and club culture.

House of Music
Das „House of Music“ (HoM Stage) entwickelte sich seit seiner Eröffnung im Jahr 2019 in Berlin zu einer vielseitigen Location für Musikevents, kulturelle Formate und Firmen-veranstaltungen. In einem industriell inspirierten Design mit großzügiger Raumaufteilung, rohen Materialien und eleganten Lichtakzenten bietet es eine urbane und zugleich gemütliche Atmosphäre. Der charakter-istische „Crohn-Kronleuchter“ und Elemente des RAW-Designs verleihen dem Ort Wärme und Individualität. Ergänzt wird das Konzept durch flexible Zusatzräume – Lounge, Workshop-raum, Backstage-Bereich –, die kreative Veranstaltungsformate er-möglichen. Heute ist das House of Music eine etablierte Adresse für kreative, professionelle und stilvolle Events im Herzen Berlins.

Urban Spree (Gallery)
Das Urban Spree eröffnete im Juni 2012 auf dem RAW-Gelände in Berlin-Friedrichshain und etablierte sich binnen kurzer Zeit als zentrale Plattform für urbane Kultur. In einem ehemaligen Industriekomplex mit rund 1 700 m² vereinte es Ausstellungen, Konzerte, Künstler-residenzen, DIY-Workshops, einen Art-Store sowie einen großzügigen Biergarten. Die Galerie (ca. 400 m²) bietet residierenden Künstler:innen, wie zum Beispiel Ben de Biel während der Stadt nach Acht, Raum für monatlich kuratierte Ausstellungen, die häufig auch die markante Artist Wall mit einbeziehen. Heute ist das Urban Spree ein lebendiger, interdisziplinärer Ort, der urbane Kunst, Musik und Gemeinschaft verbindet.

Urban Spree opened in June 2012 on the RAW site in Berlin-Friedrichshain and quickly established itself as a central platform for urban culture. Housed in a former industrial complex covering around 1,700 m², it brought together exhibitions, concerts, artist residencies, DIY workshops, an art store, and a spacious beer garden. The gallery (approx. 400 m²) provides resident artists, like Ben de Biel during Stadt nach Acht, with space for monthly curated exhibitions, often incorporating the iconic Artist Wall. Today, Urban Spree is a vibrant, interdisciplinary venue that unites urban art, music, and community.
