Shayla (they/them) is the current Head of the Drugs Service at Release, the UK’s centre of expertise on drugs and drug laws. Originally from Baltimore, USA, Shayla has worked in the harm reduction field since 2015, at centres for people who use drugs and sex worker projects in three cities in the USA (Baltimore, Washington DC, and New York City) before moving to London, UK. Shayla’s particular harm reduction skills are working with people affected by patriarchy, people who use methamphetamine, and people who trade sex. At Release, Shayla oversees the Drugs department, including managing the drug treatment advocacy work, advising on partner’s research work, oversight of Release’s research on homelessness amongst people who use drugs, and the operation of the Harm Reduction Hub. Shayla also has a MSc in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford and is a current Medical Humanities in Practice Research Fellow with Durham University’s Institute of Medical Humanities.
