This session begins with a keynote by Jean-François Ouellet (HEC Montréal), presenting groundbreaking research on the economic impact of Berlin’s club culture as a key driver in the relocation decisions of highly skilled expatriates. Based on a survey of over 500 expats, the study estimates that Berlin’s nightlife indirectly contributes over €2.8 billion annually to the city’s economy by attracting globally mobile talent — challenging traditional views of economic development and urban policy.
Immediately following the keynote, a panel discussion will bring together representatives from Berlin’s tech sector, the talent services team at Berlin Partner, and key figures from the city’s club scene. Together, they will unpack the findings, share on-the-ground perspectives, and explore what this means for Berlin’s future as a vibrant, inclusive, and competitive global city.
Topics include:
The strategic role of club culture in city branding and talent attraction
How cultural and lifestyle factors influence tech-sector recruitment
Policy tools to protect and enhance Berlin’s creative ecosystems
Aligning economic development with cultural identity and soft power
